About the Author
Harold K. Smith, a native of Charlotte, North Carolina, is a retired U.S. Army First Sergeant, former Distinguished Army instructor, educator, mentor, and leadership professional whose career has centered on preparing people for success beyond the classroom.
During nearly three decades of military service, he trained, developed, and mentored Soldiers while learning firsthand the importance of discipline, accountability, leadership, preparation, and clear expectations. After retiring from the military, he carried that same commitment into education, serving as a JROTC instructor and working directly with students, parents, teachers, and administrators.
His experience in both military training and public education gave him a unique perspective on the difference between simply meeting requirements and truly preparing young people for the future.
That perspective inspired Fantasy vs. Reality of the Education System: Keeping Education 100. The book challenges readers to examine graduation, discipline, accountability, parental involvement, leadership, student responsibility, and whether today's education system is adequately preparing students for life after high school.
Smith believes meaningful education requires shared responsibility:
Parents Prepare. Teachers Provide. Administrators Protect. Students Produce.
Through his writing and speaking, he hopes to encourage honest conversations about what is working, what is not, and what must change if education is going to fulfill its most important mission—preparing young people for life.

From military discipline to the high school classroom
My perspective on education comes from decades of developing young people in both the military and modern classrooms. I served nearly three decades in the U.S. Army, including years as an Army instructor preparing young adults for the unyielding realities of military service. After retiring, I spent six years in education as a JROTC instructor, teaching at the very high school I once attended.
Having witnessed firsthand what happens before and after preparation matters, I saw a stark contrast between military standards—where accountability carried real-world consequences—and classrooms where policies frequently placed promotion ahead of genuine life readiness.

A blueprint for collective accountability
Meaningful change can only happen when everyone accepts responsibility for their vital role in shaping future generations. Real educational success thrives on a clear four-part standard: Parents Prepare, Teachers Provide, Administrators Protect, and Students Produce.
Beyond the page, I actively partner with school districts, educator conferences, parent associations, and community leaders to spark honest conversations about accountability, leadership, and systemic reform. Let us stop treating the graduation stage as the finish line and start asking the harder question: are our students truly ready for life?
"Real change begins when parents prepare, teachers provide, administrators protect, and students produce. Stop confusing graduation with education."
